The Centre's primary focus concerns socially relevant research on rural and industrial development in the wider social and economic framework. Some of the research themes the Centre is currently working on include: agrarian structure and change, civil society, violence and conflict resolution, education, labour and trade unionism, Panchayati Raj institutions and rural development, population, health and family welfare. CRRID has a Population Research Centre (PRC) sanctioned by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi in July 1986. Since its inception, the PRC has been engaged in referral, analytical, evaluation and interventionist demographic studies with special focus on the northern region of India.

It was registered in 1970 as a society with C.D. Deshmukh as its founding President and Durgabai Deshmukh as its Executive Chairperson and Honorary Director.
The CSD was primarily visualised as a centre for the systematic study of the social dynamics of the economic growth process, with a special focus on the social aspects of development. It is an activist institute in the sense that it also participates directly in movements and campaigns. The ISI's main activities include research, training and social advocacy.
Profile:Major research areas include: sustainable development, slum studies, common property resources management, displacement studies, and Dalit identity. Apart from field studies and surveys, the Institute has been involved with several training programmes in research methodology, rural technologies for women, and social analysis programmes. The ISI has also engaged in social advocacy activities including campaigning and lobbying for changes in national and international policies in favour of the poor, and assisting the formation of alliances and networks among people's movements. The ISI has recently set up a Human Rights Centre that combines advocacy work with academic studies and research.
The ISI's Department of Publication and its Social Action Trust publish several journals including: Social Action (quarterly), Womens Link (quarterly), Legal News and Views (monthly), and Hum Dalit (monthly, in Hindi).

This followed a concerted effort to form a nation-wide network by travelling to universities and research institutes all over the country, trying to interest political scientists and other scholars in the project. A conference was organised at the end of the process and Lokniti was launched as a national network.

Profile:The National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration was established as a UNESCO Institute in 1962. On the expiry of the agreement with UNESCO, Government of India took over responsibility for the Centre and established it as an autonomous institute in 1970, the National State College for Educational Planners and Administrators. The Institute was renamed as National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) in 1979.
The focus of the research is multi-disciplinary with the main thrust on theory, policy-relevant methods, and techniques and process of educational planning. Research activities of the Institute seek to provide significant empirical and analytical base for educational policy and plan formulation. Major areas of research are: Education, Teachers and Development; Evaluation Studies; Sports and Education; Role of NGOs in Basic Education; and Women and Education.

Profile: The Jigyansu Tribal Research Centre works for the welfare and development of Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes and economically weaker sections of society. Since its inception in 1979, it has worked with nearly 115 major tribes and 275 minor tribes in India and South East Asia. The Centre undertakes research projects on tribal welfare and acculturisation of Indian tribes; conducts projects on capacity building and training of field workers, tribal youth and women particularly in the income generating and empowerment activities, social justice and self-governance. It also conducts sustainable development programmes all over the country for the tribal people. It has published several reports on policy issues, particularly on those related to Tribal Welfare and a list of these may be accessed from www.indiasocial.org/jigyansu/activities.htm.

Profile: SAHRDC is committed to educating and stoping violation of human rights in South Asia. The centre's mandate is to investigate, document and disseminate information about human rights treaties and convention, human rights education, media freedom, prison reforms, political imprisonment, torture and other human rights violations. SAHRDC also conducts human rights training programs in South and East Asia.
The centre's website hosts an online resource center for accessing investigative reports located at www.hrdc.net/sahrdc/resources.htm. The centre's archival holdings include information, articles and reports; court documents affidavits, data questionnaires, leaflets, clippings from media reports and books on human rights. In collaboration with Human Rights Documentation Centre, it is presently bringing out a fortnightly electronic news feature service called Human Rights Features (HRF) which will provide detailed information on human rights, democracy and good governance.
