    The GB Pant Social Science Institute was established in 1981 under the joint initiative of the Indian Council of Social Science Research and the Govt. of Uttar Pradesh. It is concerned with inter-disciplinary social science research particularly in the fields of socio-economic development, popular culture, public policies and social technologies of modernity. It seeks to promote academic exchanges with national and international institutions and organizations and provides academic and professional training, doctoral guidance, consultancy and research feedback to scholars, agencies, institutions and government organizations concerned with development. With the aim of furthering research activities the institute has instituted the five following centers: Centre for Development, Planning and Policy; Centre for Democratic Processes and Institutions; Centre for Power, Culture and Change; Centre for Human Development; and Centre for Population Environment and Health.
    It has recently established the Museum of Ethnography and Development aimed at providing a rich historical and anthropological understanding of local life and development processes of UP.

    VV Giri National Labour Institute is engaged in research, training, education, publication and consultancy on labour related issues. It has instituted several centers working on labour issues: Centre for Agrarian Relations and Rural Labour; Centre for Labour Market Studies; Centre for Employment Relations and Regulations; National Resource on Child Labour; Centre for Gender and Labour and Centre for Health and Labour. It also conducts the Integrated Labour History Research Programme aimed at initiating, integrating and reviving historical research on labour in India. Besides publishing reports on labour issues, the institute brings out four regular publications in the form of journals: Labour and Development, Awards Digest, Shram Vidhan and Shram Jagat.
